My home is 13 yrs old and I need more space. I want to add 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. I’m hearing it is cheaper to go out into the back yard with the addition rather than going up. I am pre-approved for a home equity loan but wondered if the 203K would allow for more money for the renovation.

Best Way to Pay Off Credit Card Debt?
Monday, September 28th, 2009Here is my situation. I am moving into a new house, and put a large amount of the expenses of renovation, new furniture, etc on my credit card. The balance is currently about K. I am trying to decide what to do to pay it down. I could take savings, which are down because of the market, and pay it off but I would pretty much have very little in liquidity after that. I could also get a home equity loan (my mortgage is quite a bit lower than the appraised value) at about 5% for five years, but that would add debt as well. What are people’s recommendations? Is there another option? I want to wipe out the cc debt asap.
Are interests from a loan to update a roof tax deductible?
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009I live in Florida-US and am updating the old roof of my home with a completely new one before the next hurricane season. I assume that this won’t be a tax deductible expense if I pay for it directly, but would I be able to deduct interests of a home equity loan used towards this renovation?
What is the smartest way to finance a rennovation on a house?
Friday, August 28th, 2009I’m looking to do some major rennovations on my house and figuring out the best way to finance it has been racking my brain. I just can’t figure out the pros & cons between refinancing, 2nd mortgages, home equity line of credits, etc.
A little background on the house, It is located in North NJ in a very high demand area. I bought the house over 6 years ago for 5k, it’s currently valued around 0k. Our current Mortgage is around 5k. I estimate my renovation to cost around 0k-0k. We plan to be in this house for a long time. We’re looking to add a 2 car garage, extending the living room, redoing the kitchen and adding a master bedroom.
any advice on what direction I should head in and pifalls to look out for would be greatly appreciated.
Can I write off the interest if I use the Heloc on my rental to pay off the 2nd mortgage on my primary house.?
Sunday, July 5th, 2009I have a rental property that I took out a Heloc on and the rate for the Heloc is much lower then the rate I have for the second mortgage on my primary home. If I use the Heloc that is on my rental property to pay off the second mortgage on my primary home can I still write off the interest on my taxes.
i am going to refinance to home mortgage, will it hurt if i take a loan from my 401k?
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009I want to refinance my mortgage so I can add an extension to my home. I would like to borrow some money from my 401k to help pay for the addition. Will borrowing from my 401k be a problem when I refinance? ( I am borrowing from my 401k since my home does not have enough equity to fully pay for renovation) Am I better off waiting till the refinance is completed to borrow funds from 401k?
(my job is secure and I understand the risks and downfalls of borrowing from 401k, looking to borrow 30,000)
