If grandma owned the home in joint tenancy, then the home belongs to the surviving joint tenant.
My guess is that the home was originally joint tenancy with grandma and grandpa. Then, when grandpa died, grandma became sole owner. If that’s the case, the home will pass according to the intestate succession laws of Illinois. I’m not going to look those up for you, but I can say is that the home will *probably* be divided equally among grandma’s children. If one of grandma’s children pre-deceased her, then the deceased child’s children (your cousins) will receive the share that the deceased child would have received.
Before any of that happens, you will need to file for probate in the local probate court.
Your grandmother died without a will (intestate). I recommend consulting with a lawyer. You need to have the estate opened, then have your mother’s assets distributed according to the state’s laws of intestate succession (laws governing inheritance when there is no will). If there is just you and your mother, you’ll request the state to allow the property to pass to you and your mother. You will probably have to refinance the mortgages due to the fact that the original mortgagee is deceased.
